Guidelines for Strategy Game Design

A functional and lightweight game design manual by Level 99's D. Brad Talton Jr,
on how to create tense, dynamic, decision-driven games.

§ 5.0 - Accessible to its audience.

§ 5.0 - Accessible to its audience.

§ 5.0 - Accessible to its audience.

Accessibility is of paramount importance. If a game can’t be played, it can’t be enjoyed, and so it can’t fulfill its purpose.

Of course, accessibility is relative to the game’s audience. One can only gauge accessibility in terms of the audience and their tolerances for complexity and nuance, which also varies from person to person.

Experienced gamers can accept a great deal of complexity in order to achieve a great experience. Casual gamers will balk if your rulebook is more than a single page.

These guidelines will help you define and then meet the needs of your game's audience.
